1- became famous for tattooing sailors, that is also how he got his name
2- he got his start train hopping and doing stuck and poke tattoos
3- he did not learn how to use a tattoo gun until he'd been tattooing for 2 years
4- he set up his own tattoo shop in Honolulu in 1942. He had to shut it down in 1950, only to reopen in 1960
5- his apprentices Ed Hard, Mike Malone, and Kazuo Oguri later went on to become tattoo legends
